How often will a dynamic IP address change?

What will cause it to change? I know that if I turn my modem off my IP address will change. I just want my IP address to stay the same for about a week or 2 without having to pay for a static. Is it possible? How often will a dynamic IP address change?
It depends on the lease duration of the ip address. The default settings is for 8 days. Most computers try to renew either within four days or each time its turned on. If you leave your computer on, it will not release an ip address to the dhcp server; thus that is one way of keeping the same ip address. How often will a dynamic IP address change?
Depends on the ISP.

yes dont lose power, dont reset modem or router and dont turn off computer. you would be ok with a mac not sure a pc can go a week without a reboot without crawling.

oh yeah dont do a flushdns or ipconfig /release
why do u care ur ip so much? of course it is depend on your isp. static ip will cost u..but there always a way for that.. try googling..
To figure out how long your DHCP lease in Windows is....

1. Goto Start -%26gt; Run and in the open dialog box type cmd and hit Enter

2. Once the command prompt is up type 'ipconfig /all' without the quotes

3. Under the adapter info with your IP address, the last 2 lines will tell you when the lease was obtained and when it will expire. Here's my output....

Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Monday, August 20, 2007 7:24:14 AM

Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Monday, August 27, 2007 7:24:14 AM

You can tell from the dates my DHCP is configured to lease an IP for 7 days.
If you care so much about not changing IP address, the better solution is to have a Dynamic DNS service, so you will have a name, instead of an IP address that will change.

So either register a No-IP.com account, or DYNDNS.org account, or the likes, and install the program they provided. Then you will be able to have a name like

yourname.no-ip.com or yourname.dyndns.org for your computer.

Then you will be able to either run your remote control program, you own website, or your own FTP site using the above name , without the hasttle of dynamic IP.
You can't force your IP address to remain the same if your ISP decides to reset your link.. You would have to restart your Modem and then will more than likely be assigned a new IP address.. ISP's reset people's links to ';encourage'; people like you to pay for a static IP, but if you leave your modem on, and your ISP doesn't reset your line, then you might be lucky.. I've managed as much as a month, but I'm now paying for a static IP because it's a whole lot easier.
